Три дня августа 91-го и две недели октября 93-го Дмитрий Борко провел у осажденного Белого дома, который назывался сперва Домом Правительства, потом стал Парламентом РСФСР, а в конце - суверенной России. Он работал фотокорреспондентом популярных московских газет. Сперва - "Независимой", утратившей впоследствии свою популярность. А затем - "Сегодня", и вовсе прекратившей существование. Album Vilmorin. The Vegetable Garden
The French company "Vilmorin-Andrieux & Cie" arose in the 18th century from the collaboration between Philippe Victoire de Vilmorin - a grain and plant merchant and connoisseur - and his father-in-law, Pierre Andrieux, Botanist to the King. The Vilmorins, though only producers and merchants on the Paris market, contributed enormously to the botanical and agronomic knowledge of their time. Their first catalog, comprising all kinds of seeds for kitchen-garden vegetables - including legumes, salad plants, flower seeds and bulbs - appeared in 1766. It was followed by a series of Publications periodiques in which the quality of the botanical and horticultural information was equaled only by the illustrations. By the mid-19th century, the firm had become the most important seed company in the world - active in production, trade, and scientific advances, thanks largely to Louis de Vilmorin's crucial research into selection and heredity in the 1850s. At the height of its international renown, the company published its splendid "Album Vilmorin. Les Plantes potageres (The Vegetable Garden, 1850-1895) featuring 46 magnificent color plates". The Vilmorins employed some 15 painters to create this work of agro-botanic iconography; most had trained as artist-naturalists at the Jardin des Plantes, the former Royal Gardens, including Elisa Champin, who painted a large number of the finest plates. These illustrations - reproduced here with exquisite care and accuracy - transcend mere artistic interest, beautiful as they are; they are also a valuable resource for anyone researching cultivarietal evolution, and old varieties of fruits and vegetables.

Eadweard Muybridge. The Human and Animal Locomotion Photographs
English photographer Eadweard Muybridge was a pioneer in visual studies of human and animal locomotion. In 1872, he famously helped settle a bet for former California governor Leland Stanford by photographing a galloping horse. Muybridge invented a complex system of electric shutter releases that captured freeze frames-proving conclusively, for the first time, that a galloping horse lifts all four hooves off the ground for a fraction of a second. For the next three decades, Muybridge continued his quest to fully catalog many aspects of human and animal movement, shooting hundreds of horses and other animals-and of nude or draped subjects engaged in various activities such as running, walking, boxing, fencing, and descending a staircase (the latter study inspired Marcel Duchamp's famous 1912 painting).

This resplendent book traces the life and work of Muybridge, from his early thinking about anatomy and movement to his latest photographic experiments. The complete 781 plates of Muybridge's groundbreaking Animal Locomotion (1887) are reproduced here. Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904), born in England but active as a photographer in the United States for most of his adventurous life, was a key figure in photographic history. In early 1964, Harry Benson was getting on a plane for a foreign assignment in Africa, when he got a call from the photo editor of London newspaper The Daily Express. He was now going with The Beatles to Paris to document French Beatlemania and what followed was the biggest (ticket to) ride of his life.

Benson was warmly welcomed into The Beatles' inner sanctum, resulting in some of the most intimate photographs ever taken of the band, then on the cusp of world domination. In Paris, he took the famous photograph of the Fab Four having a pillow fight at the George V Hotel; he shot their groundbreaking first visit to the United States, the full impact of New York hysteria, their famous appearance on The Ed Sullivan show, the band in Florida, including their surprising encounter with Cassius Clay; as well as on the set of A Hard Day's Night. The relationship continued in 1966, including George's honeymoon in Barbados and their notorious US tour, under the shadow cast by Lennon's comment that the Beatles were "bigger than Jesus Christ."

Benson's luminous black and white photographs show at close quarters The Beatles composing, performing, encountering their fans, relaxing, and engaging with each other, while trying to cope with their increasingly isolating fame. Herbarium Amoris Floral Romance
The notion of plant sexuality was initiated by Swedish botanist and physician Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778). Working with his collection of over 20, 000 specimens, Linnaeus grouped flowers and plants in a Calendarium Florae, and systematically classified plant species by the number and arrangement of their reproductive parts, drawing direct parallels with human sexual organs. Highly controversial at the time, the assertion that a plant's stamens and pistils mirror human genitalia resulted in a 'sexual revolution' in plant taxonomy.

Swedish photographer Edvard Koinberg creates a modern visual counterpart to Linnaeus's work, approaching the subject with equal passion and dedication. Having cultivated several hundred plants in his country house, Koinberg photographs each delicate bloom in his studio under perfect lighting conditions, depicting the life cycle of various flora as they bud, flourish and wane, resulting in a modern Calendarium Florae, a visual calendar that charts the year through flowers.

In Herbarium Amoris, Koinberg captures the lyricism and refulgent eroticism of the floral world in vivid close-ups, shot against dark backgrounds, the dew glittering on outspread petals, the most delicate of vegetal forms infused with unbridled life force.

Edvard Koinberg, born 1964 in Stockholm, Sweden, photographs plants in the artistic tradition of Sweden's Enlightenment and Dutch painters from the 17th and 18th centuries. His work has been exhibited extensively throughout Europe, the USA, Russia, China, Indonesia, South Africa, and Australia.

About the authors:

Tore Frangsmyr, born 1938, was professor of scientific history at Uppsala University, Sweden. A former director of the Center for History of Science at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, his books include Linnaeus: The Man and His Work. He is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities.

Henning Mankell, born 1948 in Stockholm, is a widely renowned Swedish crime writer, occasional children's author, and dramatist. While living in Mozambique, he retains close ties to his native country. He is an admirer of Carl Linnaeus, perhaps the most outstanding figure of Scandinavia's Enlightenment era.

But is there an accurate word that defines something which originally belonged to the other and was taken from him or her without permission?

Stolen.

I am talking about a photograph taken without a permission. Digitalized sneak shot of a fleeting moment in someone else's life with no beginning and no end. It could become an eternity, but we just can not stop and really believe it. Nevertheless, it becomes eternal because there is nothing more endless and immediate than a silence of a moment, even the shortest one. Strange or familiar people in the focus of a camera lens. Camera hidden in the folds of a coat. Click of a shutter shooting from the hip on a subway escalator, on a street, in a cafe or... in an operating room of a field hospital.

Which is more sincere? The given or the stolen?

The vision! The vision of a photographer who documents reality in its most expected and unexpected manifestations.

That is why today I combine both of these principles and turn them into allies and partners in that very magical instant which I devoted my whole life to - my photography.

Industrial Realism. Labor in Soviet Painting and Photography
The industrial revolution in the Soviet Union meant immeasurably more than the mere construction of a network of factories. In many ways, it determined the fate of the country and each of its citizens. The popularity of heroic workers was rivaled only by that of movie stars. Masses of people left their homes to build new gigantic factories. Millions labored in mines and built dams. Naturally, Soviet art could not ignore the theme of industry. Poets composed odes to construction sites, literature gained the new genre of the "industrial novel, " and words like "Stakhanovite" (a worker who produces fantastically large yields), "socialist com petition" and "truant" took firm places in the language. Artists made panoramas of workshops, foundries and factories, and painted portraits of shock workers. Newspapers and magazines constantly printed reports of masters of photographs of the sites where Socialism was being built. Temporal distance now allows us to speak of "industrial realism" - a unique phenomenon in Soviet painting and photography and the subject of this book.
