Frida Kahlo. The Gisele Freund Photographs
In 1950, photographer Gisele Freund embarked on a two-week trip to Mexico, but she wouldn't leave until two years later. There she met the legendary couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Welcomed into their home, she immersed herself in their private lives and the cultural and artistic diversity of the country, taking hundreds of photographs. These powerful photographs, among the last taken before Kahlo's death, bear poignant witness to Frida's beauty and talent.

Showcasing more than 100 of these rare images, many of which have never been published before, the book also includes previously unpublished commentary by Gisele Freund about Frida Kahlo, texts by Kahlo's biographer Gerard de Cortanze and art historian Lorraine Audric, as well as a link to a previously unreleased color film, shot by Freund, showing Diego Rivera at work.

About the author

Gisele Freund (1908-2000) was one of the first female members of Magnum Photos and is also known as one of the greatest portrait photographers of all time. She photographed an incredible number of renowned writers and artists, including Vladimir Nabokov, Virginia Woolf, and James Joyce, among others.

Born in 1979 in Leszno, Paulina Otylie Surys is a Polish fashion photographer based in London, UK. Influenced by her study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poland, she started to experiment with the photographic medium working on Polaroids, manipulating and hand-colouring them. She then completed her education in Photography at Middlesex University in London. Applying a mixture of toners, chemicals, inks and dry dyes, photography and painting merge in equal measure in her images. She employs a variety of vintage cameras, working with 35mm, medium and large format film, and uses a wide range of techniques such as tintype and the wet plate collodion processing. Surys' practice is inspired by an old and traditional form of colourizations that introduces limited colour into a black-and-white film. Inspired by mythological stories and Medieval sorcerers, alchemists and mystics, Surys' work centres on creating surreal and unique situations that combine the world of reality with the domain of imagination, illusion and hallucination. Born in 1969 and based in Moscow, Russia. The photographer Vladimir Mishukov obtained his BA at the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts in 1995. His first exhibition People for people was held in 2000 at the Butyrskaya prison in Moscow. Between 2000 and 2004, Mishukov was awarded the Silver Camera Grand Prix (Russia) in categories "Events and Everyday Life", "Architecture" and "Faces", and in 2004 he was granted a scholarship by the city of Paris. Since then, his work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Lausanne (2010), Aix-en-Provence (2011), and Moscow (2012). He has worked for several magazines such as VOGUE, GQ, ELLE, Instyle, Harpers BAZAAR, GLAMOUR and Madame Figaro; and he is the author of several photographic albums such as Inseparable (2011), Polnopolunie (2010) and Family Cult (2006).

LOOK. David Bailey
One of the first celebrity photographers, David Bailey socialized with many of the cultural icons of the 60s - he lived with Mick Jagger, married the legendary French film actress Catherine Deneuve and had relationships with the models Jean Shrimpton and Penelope Tree. He has also created record-sleeve art, feature films, documentaries and around 500 commercials. The vigour and variety of his work has made him the subject of numerous exhibitions, including a major traveling show that opened at the Barbican, London, in 1999 entitled "The Birth of Cool".

This handsome monograph provides an overview of Bailey's career, including works from key monographs such as his debut Box of Pin-Ups (1964) and the controversial series The Lady is a Tramp (1995). Herbarium Amoris Floral Romance
The notion of plant sexuality was initiated by Swedish botanist and physician Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778). Working with his collection of over 20, 000 specimens, Linnaeus grouped flowers and plants in a Calendarium Florae, and systematically classified plant species by the number and arrangement of their reproductive parts, drawing direct parallels with human sexual organs. Highly controversial at the time, the assertion that a plant's stamens and pistils mirror human genitalia resulted in a 'sexual revolution' in plant taxonomy.

Swedish photographer Edvard Koinberg creates a modern visual counterpart to Linnaeus's work, approaching the subject with equal passion and dedication. Eadweard Muybridge. The Human and Animal Locomotion Photographs
English photographer Eadweard Muybridge was a pioneer in visual studies of human and animal locomotion. In 1872, he famously helped settle a bet for former California governor Leland Stanford by photographing a galloping horse. Muybridge invented a complex system of electric shutter releases that captured freeze frames-proving conclusively, for the first time, that a galloping horse lifts all four hooves off the ground for a fraction of a second. For the next three decades, Muybridge continued his quest to fully catalog many aspects of human and animal movement, shooting hundreds of horses and other animals-and of nude or draped subjects engaged in various activities such as running, walking, boxing, fencing, and descending a staircase (the latter study inspired Marcel Duchamp's famous 1912 painting).

Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904), born in England but active as a photographer in the United States for most of his adventurous life, was a key figure in photographic history. The French company "Vilmorin-Andrieux & Cie" arose in the 18th century from the collaboration between Philippe Victoire de Vilmorin - a grain and plant merchant and connoisseur - and his father-in-law, Pierre Andrieux, Botanist to the King. The Vilmorins, though only producers and merchants on the Paris market, contributed enormously to the botanical and agronomic knowledge of their time. Their first catalog, comprising all kinds of seeds for kitchen-garden vegetables - including legumes, salad plants, flower seeds and bulbs - appeared in 1766. It was followed by a series of Publications periodiques in which the quality of the botanical and horticultural information was equaled only by the illustrations. By the mid-19th century, the firm had become the most important seed company in the world - active in production, trade, and scientific advances, thanks largely to Louis de Vilmorin's crucial research into selection and heredity in the 1850s. At the height of its international renown, the company published its splendid "Album Vilmorin. Les Plantes potageres (The Vegetable Garden, 1850-1895) featuring 46 magnificent color plates". The Vilmorins employed some 15 painters to create this work of agro-botanic iconography; most had trained as artist-naturalists at the Jardin des Plantes, the former Royal Gardens, including Elisa Champin, who painted a large number of the finest plates. In the mid-60s, artists in the USA and Europe began planning works for sites outside the narrow boundaries of galleries and museums.
