Angela Carter's Book Of Wayward Girls And Wicked Women
This bestselling collection of stories extols the female virtues of discontent, sexual disruptiveness and bad manners Here are subversive tales - by Ama Ata Aidoo, Jane Bowles, Angela Carter, Colette, Bessie Head, Jamaica Kincaid and Katherine Mansfield among others - all have one thing in common: the wish to restore adventuresses and revolutionaries to their rightful position as models for all women

Reflecting the wide-ranging intelligence and deliciously anarchic taste of Angela Carter, some of these stories celebrate toughness and resilience, some of them low cunning: all of them are about not being nice.

From award-winning author Eugene Vodolazkin comes this poignant story of memory, love and loss spanning twentieth-century Russia A man wakes up in a hospital bed, with no idea who he is or how he came to be there. The only information the doctor shares with his patient is his name: Innokenty Petrovich Platonov. As memories slowly resurface, Innokenty begins to build a vivid picture of his former life as a young man in Russia in the early twentieth century, living through the turbulence of the Russian Revolution and its aftermath. But soon, only one question remains: how can he remember the start of the twentieth century, when the pills by his bedside were made in 1999? Reminiscent of the great works of twentieth-century Russian literature, with nods to Dostoevsky s Crime and Punishment and Bulgakov s The White Guard, The Aviator cements Vodolazkin s position as the rising star of Russia s literary scene.

The short stories of Victor Pelevin are as individual, reality-warping and endlessly inventive as his novels, moving effortlessly between different genres and moods, bursting with absurd wit and existential satire. In The Blue Lantern he brings together sex-change prostitutes, melancholy animals and a cabinful of young boys obsessed by death. Sidestepping the world we take for granted, these stories show in miniature the fantastical talent for which the Observer acclaimed Pelevin's work as 'the real thing, fiction of world class'.

Haunting stories from the Soviet-Afghan War from the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature 'A masterpiece of reportage' (New York Review of Books)- A new translation based on the updated and expanded text - From 1979 to 1989 Soviet troops engaged in a devastating war in Afghanistan that claimed thousands of casualties on both sides. While the Soviet Union talked about a 'peace-keeping' mission, the dead were shipped back in sealed zinc coffins. Boys in Zinc presents the honest testimonies of soldiers, doctors and nurses, mothers, wives and siblings who describe the lasting effects of war. Weaving together their stories, Svetlana Alexievich shows us the truth of the Soviet-Afghan conflict: the killing and the beauty of small everyday moments, the shame of returned veterans, the worries of all those left behind. When it was first published in the USSR in 1991, Boys in Zinc sparked huge controversy for its unflinching, harrowing insight into the realities of war.

This book represents an author's collection. Touching, sad, and faith-filled poetry will help the readers to think deep over eternal, joyful, and beautiful matters. The people who came to God became the prototype characters of the poetry. They live, rejoice, suffer, and still remain human. The rhyme of the verses is correct, well-adjusted, thus reading is not only bringing pleasure, but also makes one think of many things: about life and death, good and evil, the faith and human values.

Chernobyl Prayer. A Chronicle of the Future
This book offers a startling history of the Chernobyl disaster by Svetlana Alexievich, the winner of the Nobel prize in literature 2015. On 26 April 1986, at 1.23 am, a series of explosions shook the Chernobyl nuclear reactor. Flames lit up the sky and radiation escaped to contaminate the land and poison the people for years to come. While officials tried to hush up the accident, Svetlana Alexievich spent years collecting testimonies from survivors - clean-up workers, residents, firefighters, resettlers, widows, orphans - crafting their voices into a haunting oral history of fear, anger and uncertainty, but also dark humour and love. With a chronicle of the past and a warning for our nuclear future, Chernobyl Prayer shows what it is like to bear witness, and remember in a world that wants you to forget.

It's generally believed that simple interest belongs to a simple worldview, but the search for fundamental knowledge is the prerogative of people with far-reaching plans. Herewith, the first, sometimes, may unexpectedly lead to success, and the second - not bring the desired results. Maybe folks who accept life as a quest, a self-development way (where you can invent and bring into civilization something new and valuable) are right?

As usual, who knows how to work - works, who doesn't - governs, who got none of either - teaches. And therefore this brochure contains only examples of personal worldview and the conclusions made on the life-path.

You may like it if you appreciate conscience, prudence, objectiveness, composure, absence of malice, strength and freedom of spirit, the skill to hear yourself and the circumstances around, and, of course, love to yourself and good people as well.

Perhaps, some of poems written here will be useful to you and will help you to figure out what's to be done next.

Disrupted Breath
What are the things experienced by the human soul on the sharpest edge of death or life? Isn't this nothing but revealing of the personality's true essence? The story "Shahid" is an attempt to look "beyond" ... Breathing is so rapid that it is impossible to breathe in ... The heart breaks into pieces of horror. The fate of an ordinary boy viewed through the crushed crooked mirrors of war in the conflict of East and West.

The search, the slow clarification of the one's his true path, the lessons taught by life and love, are in the stories "Lollipops", "Christmas Jam", "Chestnuts", "At the Donskoy Monastery".

"The Weird Man" is the strangest of all stories in this book. The title of it appeared in my dream. Entire epochs of Soviet life are seen through the story of my heroes. The invention, artfully connected with another invention... You would never guess what happened for real truth in it, in this story. I wish you a risky and unpredictable journey to other people's stories - in my book "Disrupted Breath".

This title is translated and with an introduction by Robert Chandler. Moscow in the 1930s is a symbol of Soviet paradise; a fairy-tale capital where, in Stalin's words, 'life has become better, life has become merrier". Beautiful, passionate, Moscow Chestnova bears her captial's name, and seeks the happiness it promises. She flits from man to man, fascinated by the brave new world supposedly taking shape around her, on a quest for the better life. This anarchic satire is accompanied by related works - short stories, an essay and a screenplay - and through Robert Chandler's acclaimed new translations Platonov's extraordinary prose and original vision can at last be experienced in full.

A Russian cyberthriller that has been a huge hit in Russia and now looks set to be an international cult novel.

26-year-old Vadim hates his job in the PR department of Latvia's biggest bank. He spends his time playing his favourite shoot-em-up computer game, 'Headcrusher', and composing insulting emails about his bosses. When his manager catches him writing one such email, Vadim is so overcome with rage that he kills him. Then he kills the bank's security guard too, because he has seen him disposing of the body. Bumping people off comes to seem as easy as playing a computer game (or moving money between bank accounts) and Vadim embarks on a killing spree, putting paid to anyone who annoys him. But, as he becomes embroiled in the murky activities of the corrupt bank, which is laundering money for Mafia criminals, he starts to lose touch with reality. Where does truth end and fantasy begin - and is life just one big computer game?

This high-octane debut novel has the energy of a Tarantino film, the game-playing of The Matrix and the philosophical quirkiness of Fight Club. Nothing quite like it has come out of Russia before. It has been a major bestseller there and has been picked up by publishers around the world.

This wonderfully inventive collection of stories presents the writing of Russian absurdist Daniil Kharms at its vibrant, perplexing best. The book is composed of short miniatures: strange, funny, dream-like fragments - many of which the author called 'incidents' - that tend to feature accidents, falling, chance violence and sudden death. An outlaw classic banned by Soviet censors until the 1980s, Incidences vividly conveys the precarious nature of life in Stalin's Russia. Writing in the 1920s as one of a group called the Society for Real Art, Kharms was first arrested in 1931, and told that he could only publish writing for children. Irrepressible, he was sent to the gulag in 1941 and died of starvation in a prison hospital a year later. With this new edition of Incidences , we can rediscover a Russian writer whose bold writing and tragic death are an urgent reminder of the deranged spirit of his times.

The first English translation of the novel Kashira Highway, a fine example of Russian "psychodelic realism." Andrei Monastyrski s semi-autobiographical novel Kashira Highway is set in the early 1980s and tells the story of an artist s nervous breakdown, juxtaposing the gray world of Brezhnev era Moscow and the lurid landscape of the protagonist s imagination. Translated by Andrew Bromfield and with new illustrations by Pavel Pepperstein.

Andrei Monastyrski (b. 1949, Petsamo, Russia) lives and works in Moscow. He is the leader of the Moscow Conceptual School. "Knives" is a detective story. Three attempts were made to kill Clara Yurievna, a tax officer, daughter of a wealthy businessman, bride of a famous professor. The method of murder was all the same, pretty strange for our times. The author reveals a wide range of characters, day-to-day rules and life situations.

I'm Veronika Mahmurova, I'm a beginner writer, I live in Estonia, Tallinn. I decided to write my first book at the age of 21, as I always dreamed about it and wanted people all over the world to read my work. I wrote my first novel when I was in America, when I studied on screenwriting program. Also I love to write about love story, so I decided to create my characters to describe my vision of what a love story could be.

My book is about young writer Jennifer whose dream is to find a mutual love, also about her new life, and about how life could change and how suddenly dreams could come true. I believe in destiny, so therefore my book shows how through time could connect two people even if circumstances did not allow them to be together. I hope you enjoy reading my novel.

Two boys running away from a bleak reformatory begin the adventure of a lifetime, escaping despair, experiencing freedom and happiness but also running up against the cruel complexities of everyday life.

On a promontory jutting out into the Atlantic wind stands the Home run by Brother Benedict, where boys are taught a little of God and a lot of fear. To Michael Lamb, one of the youngest brothers, the regime is without hope, and when he inherits a small legacy he defies his elders and runs away, taking with him a twelve-year-old boy, Owen Kane. Radio Eireann call it a kidnapping. For Michael the act is the beginning of Owen's salvation. Posing as father and son, they concentrate on discovering the happiness that is so unfamiliar to them both. But as the outside world closes in around them - as time, money and opportunity run out - Michael finds himself moving towards a solution that is as uncompromising as it is inspired by love.

'Astonishing... Like the great Russian novels, these testimonials ring with emotional truth' - Caroline Moorehead, Guardian

Extraordinary stories about what it was like to be a Soviet child during the upheaval and horror of the Second World War, from Nobel Laureate Svetlana Alexievich

What did it mean to grow up in the Soviet Union during the Second World War? In the late 1970s, Svetlana Alexievich started interviewing people who had experienced war as children, the generation that survived and had to live with the trauma that would forever change the course of the Russian nation. With remarkable care and empathy, Alexievich gives voice to those whose stories are lost in the official narratives, uncovering a powerful, hidden history of one of the most important events of the twentieth century.

Published to great acclaim in the USSR in 1985 and now available in English for the first time, this masterpiece offers a kaleidoscopic portrait of the human consequences of the war - and an extraordinary chronicle of the Russian soul.

Yulia Tskhvediani has a background in economic planning and holds a doctorate in economics. She started writing several years ago, and her literary endeavors have not passed by unnoticed. Tskhvediani has been invited to participate in the Educational Bridge Project's twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth annual Russian-American Festivals in Moscow and Boston.

Whatever Tskhvediani is writing about - love and disappointments, the destinies of her characters, her childhood, or her numerous travel adventures - her work is permeated with sincerity, kindness, irony, selfreflection, and joie de vivre. The author is an astute observer of our occasionally paradoxical reality.

Tskhvediani is especially grateful to the two people who helped her most in writing this book: her husband, Alexander Babkov, and her friend Levon Babayan.

Metro 2033
A chilling piece of Russian dystopian fiction and the basis of three bestselling computer games Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light, and Metro: Exodus

The year is 2033. The world has been reduced to rubble. Humanity is nearly extinct. The half-destroyed cities have become uninhabitable through radiation. Beyond their boundaries, they say, lie endless burned-out deserts and the remains of splintered forests. Survivors still remember the past greatness of humankind. But the last remains of civilisation have already become a distant memory, the stuff of myth and legend.

More than 20 years have passed since the last plane took off from the earth. Rusted railways lead into emptiness. The ether is void and the airwaves echo to a soulless howling where previously the frequencies were full of news from Tokyo, New York, Buenos Aires. Man has handed over stewardship of the earth to new life-forms. Mutated by radiation, they are better adapted to the new world. Man's time is over.

A few score thousand survivors live on, not knowing whether they are the only ones left on earth. They live in the Moscow Metro - the biggest air-raid shelter ever built. It is humanity's last refuge. Stations have become mini-statelets, their people uniting around ideas, religions, water-filters - or the simple need to repulse an enemy incursion. It is a world without a tomorrow, with no room for dreams, plans, hopes. Feelings have given way to instinct - the most important of which is survival. Survival at any price.

VDNKh is the northernmost inhabited station on its line. It was one of the Metro's best stations and still remains secure. But now a new and terrible threat has appeared. Artyom, a young man living in VDNKh, is given the task of penetrating to the heart of the Metro, to the legendary Polis, to alert everyone to the awful danger and to get help. He holds the future of his native station in his hands, the whole Metro - and maybe the whole of humanity.

Notes From the Blockade
The 900-day siege of Leningrad (1941-44) was one of the turning points of the Second World War. It slowed down the German advance into Russia and became a national symbol of survival and resistance. An estimated one million civilians died, most of them from cold and starvation. Lydia Ginzburg, a respected literary scholar (who meanwhile wrote prose 'for the desk drawer' through seven decades of Soviet rule), survived. Using her own using notes and sketches she wrote during the siege, along with conversations and impressions collected over the years, she distilled the collective experience of life under siege. Through painful depiction of the harrowing conditions of that period, Ginzburg created a paean to the dignity, vitality and resilience of the human spirit. This original translation by Alan Myers has been revised and annotated by Emily van Buskirk. This edition includes 'A Story of Pity and Cruelty', a recently discovered documentary narrative translated into English for the first time by Angela Livingstone.

Queen of the Night
Then came the evening.

The wind ceased at sunset.

The familiar streets gained a sort of twilight mystery, while your soul felt an easy anxiety, as the heart was visited by sweet pain that accompanies the first act of falling in love, when you don't know what will be the upshot of it all.

Please postpone your engagements, dear reader. I suggest you recollect how it happens. In the story called "The Queen of the Night", you will fall in love with a young astrologer and will save an enchanted maiden soul from immortality.

I'll take you along the invisible boundary between worlds and you'll see which of them the heroine of the second story would choose.

Next, you manage to penetrate into the castle of an old witch; before your very eyes, Lorinde, wearing a live cloak, will fly from trembling birds , ah, why I'm I telling you the story - pour yourself a cup of tea, light up the old family table lamp - what have you got? A green glass or with lacy old shade, and may be you have such with a lamp in the form of a candle fame and crystal icy suspensions? Sit comfortably on the chair, open the book and enjoy the vague mist of my stories.

The Blizzard
A darkly comic dystopian odyssey, from one of Russia's leading contemporary novelists

Garin, a country doctor, is desperately trying to reach the village of Dolgoye, where a mysterious epidemic is transforming the villagers into zombies. He has with him a vaccine which will prevent the spread of this epidemic, but a terrible blizzard turns his journey into the stuff of nightmare. A trip that should take hours turns into a metaphysical odyssey, in which he encounters strange beasts, apparitions, hallucinations and dangerous fellow men. Trapped in this existential storm, Sorokin's characters fight their way through a landscape that owes as much to Chekhov's 19th-century Russia as it does to near-future, post-apocalyptic literature. Fantastical, comic and richly drawn, The Blizzard at once answers to the canon of Russian writers and makes a fierce statement about life in contemporary Russia.

They have never met, they have been assigned strange pseudonyms, they inhabit identical rooms which open out onto very different landscapes, and they have entered a dialogue which they cannot escape - a discourse defined and destroyed by the Helmet of Horror. It's wearer is the dominant force they call Asterisk, a force for good and ill in which the Minotaur is forever present and Theseus is the great unknown. Victor Pelevin has created a mesmerising world where the surreal and the hyperreal collide. "The Helmet of Horror" is structured according to the internet exchanges of the twenty first century, radically reinventing the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur for an age where information is abundant but knowledge ultimately unattainable.

Walking the streets of our cities are the Others. These men and women have access to the Twilight, a shadowy parallel world of magical power that exists alongside our own. Each has sworn allegiance to one side: the Light, or the Darkness.

At Moscow airport, Higher Light Magician Anton Gorodetsky overhears a child screaming about a plane that is about to crash. He discovers that the child is a prophet: an Other with the gift of foretelling the future. When the catastrophe is averted, Gorodetsky senses a disruption in the natural order, one that is confirmed by the arrival of a dark and terrifying predator.

Gorodetsky travels to London, to Taiwan and across Russia in search of clues, unearthing as he goes a series of increasingly cataclysmic prophecies. He soon realises that what is at stake is the existence of the Twilight itself and that only he will be able to save it.

Bringing together dozens of voices in her distinctive style, The Unwomanly Face of War is Svetlana Alexievich's collection of stories from Soviet women who lived through the Second World War: on the front lines, on the home front and in occupied territories. As Alexievich gives voice to women who are absent from official narratives - captains, sergeants, nurses, snipers and pilots - she shows us a new version of the war we're so familiar with, creating an extraordinary alternative history from their private stories.

Published in 1985 in Russia and now available in English for the first time, The Unwomanly Face of War was Alexievich's first book and a huge bestseller in the Soviet Union, establishing her as a brilliantly revolutionary writer.

The Unwomanly Face of War
Extraordinary stories from Soviet women who fought in the Second World War - from the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature

"Why, having stood up for and held their own place in a once absolutely male world, have women not stood up for their history? Their words and feelings? A whole world is hidden from us. Their war remains unknown... I want to write the history of that war. A women's history."

In the late 1970s, Svetlana Alexievich set out to write her first book, The Unwomanly Face of War, when she realized that she grew up surrounded by women who had fought in the Second World War but whose stories were absent from official narratives. Travelling thousands of miles, she spent years interviewing hundreds of Soviet women - captains, tank drivers, snipers, pilots, nurses and doctors - who had experienced the war on the front lines, on the home front and in occupied territories. As it brings to light their most harrowing memories, this symphony of voices reveals a different side of war, a new range of feelings, smells and colours.

After completing the manuscript in 1983, Alexievich was not allowed to publish it because it went against the state-sanctioned history of the war. With the dawn of Perestroika, a heavily censored edition came out in 1985 and it became a huge bestseller in the Soviet Union - the first in five books that have established her as the conscience of the twentieth century.

The stargazer's servant
More than a thousand years ago, in what is now the territory of modern Mauritania and partly of its neighboring States, was located a rather powerful and militant Caliphate. The ruler of this Caliphate had at his court a personal magician, astrologer and soothsayer. The astrologer was an expert in different areas of secret knowledge, and he was highly esteemed by the ruler. In his "Book of Knowledge", he wrote down all that was of magical practices and of nature observation in detail, which came to him by inheritance from other great magicians. The Caliph's astrologer had a very inquisitive and dexterous servant, who also led his book and was going to give it to his worthy successor. Of course, the book of the servant was nothing like the great astrologer's "Book of Knowledge", but nevertheless. In our days, by a strange coincidence, both books fell into the hands of completely different people.

There Once Lived a Girl Who Seduced Her Sister's Husband, and He Hanged Himself. Love Stories
Love stories, with a twist, by Russia's preeminent contemporary fiction writer-the author of the prizewinning memoir about growing up in Stalinist Russia, The Girl from the Metropol Hotel

By turns sly and sweet, burlesque and heartbreaking, these realist fables of women looking for love are the stories that Ludmilla Petrushevskaya-who has been compared to Chekhov, Tolstoy, Beckett, Poe, Angela Carter, and even Stephen King-is best known for in Russia.

Here are attempts at human connection, both depraved and sublime, by people across the life span: one-night stands in communal apartments, poignantly awkward couplings, office trysts, schoolgirl crushes, elopements, tentative courtships, and rampant infidelity, shot through with lurid violence, romantic illusion, and surprising tenderness. With the satirical eye of Cindy Sherman, Petrushevskaya blends macabre spectacle with transformative moments of grace and shows just why she is Russia's preeminent contemporary fiction writer.

From the author of the prizewinning memoir about growing up in Stalinist Russia, The Girl from the Metropol Hotel, the masterly novellas that established her as one of the greatest living Russian writers including a new translation of the modern classic The Time Is Night

Love them, they ll torture you; don t love them, they ll leave you anyway.

After her work was suppressed for many years, Ludmilla Petrushevskaya won wide recognition for capturing the experiences of everyday Russians with profound pathos and mordant wit. Among her most famous and controversial works, these three novellas The Time Is Night, Chocolates with Liqueur (inspired by Edgar Allan Poe s The Cask of Amontillado ), and Among Friends are modern classics that breathe new life into Tolstoy s famous dictum, All happy families are alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way. Together they confirm the genius of an author with a gift for turning adversity into art.

Two suns. Historical novel
This book delves into the intertwined histories of two families-one Russian, the other Jewish-spanning the period from the aftermath of the Civil War to the 1970s of the twentieth century. Throughout the narrative, our central characters endure the hardships of famine, repression, the Great Patriotic War, post-war struggles, the thaw of the Soviet regime, and the era of Brezhnev. It is a historical saga that intimately chronicles their everyday lives, their poignant reunions and heart-wrenching separations, their resilience and acts of heroism, all amidst the profound backdrop of enduring love and appreciation despite the adversities they face.

Initially appearing so different, with distinct customs and traditions, these families find themselves united by shared tribulations and joys, imposed by the same challenging times. Although the protagonists are strangers at the outset, the 1970s see their destinies intertwined as their paths converge...

As readers immerse themselves in this compelling narrative, they will traverse different times and places: soaring through the skies and grounding themselves on the sunlit terrain of the Poltava Region; exploring the bustling streets of Henichesk; wandering through the cultural hubs of Kiev and Kharkov; meandering amidst the grandeur of Moscow and Leningrad; venturing into Yaroslavl and Gorky; embarking on captivating journeys across the vast expanses of Siberia and Central Asia. Along the way, they will gain insight into the intricacies of life in a communal Moscow apartment, experience the charm and simplicity of a Ukrainian village, and even accompany an exploration and survey party on their mission.

Throughout the course of their lives, the heroes of this tale encounter numerous individuals, spanning the spectrum from "red" to "white, " and even those who remain neutral. Each interaction leaves an indelible mark on the very fabric of their souls.

It is imperative to note that this book draws its inspiration from actual historical events, and its characters are firmly rooted in the annals of history.

Solzhenitsyn's polemical speeches - a primer for understanding the moral, political vision of the Nobel prize winner

'Can one part of humanity learn from the bitter experience of another or can it not? Is it possible or impossible to warn someone of danger...to assess soberly the worldwide menace that threatens to swallow the whole world?I was swallowed myself. I have been in the dragon's belly, in its red-hot innards. It was unable to digest me and threw me up. I have come to you as a witness to what it is like there, in the dragon's belly'During 1975 and 1976, Nobel Prize-winner Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn embarked on a series of speeches across America and Britain that would shock and scandalise both countries. His message: the West was veering towards moral and spiritual bankruptcy, and with it the world's one hope against tyranny and totalitarianism. From Solzhenitsyn's warnings about the allure of communism, to his rebuke that the West should not abandon its age-old concepts of 'good' and 'evil', the speeches collected in Warning to the West provide insight into Solzhenitsyn's uncompromising moral vision. Read today, their message remains as powerfully urgent as when Solzhenitsyn first delivered them.

Who set Hitler against Stalin?
This book will tell you who stirred Hitler into his suicidal decision to attack Stalin. It will tell you who were the real godfathers of the worst catastrophe in the history of Russia that went off on June 22, 1941. You will learn who gave money to Hitler and his party, helping the Nazi to power. Revealed in this book is the real reason behind the Nazi regime - aggression against the USSR to correct a previous blunder of Western intelligence that had led to Bolshevism in Russia. Instead of quietly disappearing with their loot, Lenin and his crew remained in the country and pieced it together into a global superpower, refusing to give it over to the West. Abundant evidence cited in this book helps trace the whole logic of events starting from September 1919 up to June 1941. The reader will emerge enlightened about who were the true preachers and masterminds of World War II, and who must share responsibility with the Nazi for their hideous crimes.

Paul Auster's greatest, most heartbreaking and satisfying novel-a sweeping and surprising story of birthright and possibility, of love and of life itself.

Nearly two weeks early, on March 3, 1947, in the maternity ward of Beth Israel Hospital in Newark, New Jersey, Archibald Isaac Ferguson, the one and only child of Rose and Stanley Ferguson, is born. From that single beginning, Ferguson's life will take four simultaneous and independent fictional paths. Four identical Fergusons made of the same DNA, four boys who are the same boy, go on to lead four parallel and entirely different lives. Family fortunes diverge. Athletic skills and sex lives and friendships and intellectual passions contrast. Each Ferguson falls under the spell of the magnificent Amy Schneiderman, yet each Amy and each Ferguson have a relationship like no other. Meanwhile, readers will take in each Ferguson's pleasures and ache from each Ferguson's pains, as the mortal plot of each Ferguson's life rushes on.

As inventive and dexterously constructed as anything Paul Auster has ever written, yet with a passion for realism and a great tenderness and fierce attachment to history and to life itself that readers have never seen from Auster before. 4 3 2 1 is a marvelous and unforgettably affecting tour de force.
